Global life sciences company Labcorp established its project management apprenticeship pathway in 2018 as a response to the challenges of recruiting and retaining suitably qualified project managers. Apprentices experience a range of learning and improve their technical skills, knowledge and confidence. Programme outcomes include the recruitment of 36 project managers to address a skills gap and an increase in female project managers.
Masters in Biopharmaceutical Development: Creating a skilled talent pipeline

Since achieving an Award in 2020, Labcorp has continued to develop a strong talent pipeline through its delivery of an MSc in Biopharmaceutical Development in partnership with Leeds University. 97 graduates have completed the programme with 70% being promoted and Labcorp has used the training design to create a shorter in-house training programme which has been delivered to 400 employees.
Yorkshire Women’s Empowerment Network: Promoting opportunities through developing supportive networks

Dedicated to breaking down female employees’ barriers to success whilst supporting learning and development, Labcorp achieved an Award for its Women in Science Network programme, now the Yorkshire WEN (Women’s Empowerment Network) and has demonstrated continued commitment to this programme. Not only has the network been a catalyst for global policy review and difficult conversations around menopause and the gender pay gap, membership has also increased, 75% of core team members have been promoted and 70% of participants reported career progression.
Developing the Leaders of Tomorrow: Strengthening the management population with apprenticeships

This leading global life sciences organisation launched an apprenticeship programme focused on team leaders and managers to fill a skills gap, increase diversity and make company savings. 54 learners have been through the programme to date, with 44% receiving promotions, a 100% success at End Point Assessment and a reduction in staff turnover from 34% to 9%. The programme’s success has resulted in the model being rolled out across the globe.
Developing the Laboratory Technicians of the Future – an inclusive approach to reducing turnover

Labcorp established an apprenticeship programme to address the high turnover in Laboratory Technician roles and the under-representation of minority ethnic groups and people with learning difficulties. Outcomes have included reduced turnover, significant financial savings, targets of BAME and LD apprentices being exceeded, and 95% of those completing the apprenticeship going on to higher level studies.
Ignite Your Impact – developing female leadership

Labcorp responded to the low representation of women in leadership roles through the development of a virtual classroom programme for women. Completed by 22 UK women to date, the programme has led to increased confidence, shared learning and achievement of leadership roles, as well as more promotions, lower attrition rates and a decreased gender pay gap among participants.
Women in Science (WISE) Network – Inspiring female talent

This research organisation which provides clinical and commercialisation services to pharmaceutical industries created the foundation for a pipeline of female leadership talent. In response to female employees’ perceived and actual barriers to success, it developed the Women in Science Network. Female employees are now making up 60% of all promotions in the UK arm of the business.
MSc in Biopharmaceutical Development: Delivering MSc to address skills shortage

This contract research organisation providing pharmaceutical services needed a pipeline of new talent to address an industry-wide skills shortage. It created an MSc in Biopharmaceutical Development and works in partnership with Leeds University – retaining currency of subject matter and combining this with academic credibility. Of the 12 participants trained to-date, 9 have been promoted.
