South Staffordshire Council introduced a comprehensive leadership and talent development programme to support organisational transformation and new ways of working. Since 2022, all 65 leaders have completed leadership coaching and 47 employees have progressed through the Aspire programme. The initiative has strengthened leadership capability, improved culture and wellbeing, increased staff advocacy from 67% to 97%, and achieved an impressive 93.5% retention rate.

Delivering clinical and professional excellence

Facing a decline in the uptake of optical-dispensing qualifications, Specsavers redesigned its Level 3 BTEC programme in 2023, training 3,000 learners in three years and rebuilding its talent pipeline. The tailored, family-oriented programme delivers clinical and professional excellence, boosting learner progression and retention. Impact includes 91% post-programme staff retention, higher customer satisfaction and a stronger sales performance of between 16% and 30% per store.

Stainless Metalcraft (Chatteris) Ltd

Addressing an ageing workforce through career development

Stainless Metalcraft developed a structured five-year Apprenticeship and Career Development Programme to secure critical engineering skills and address long-term workforce sustainability challenges. Operating in a rural location with limited access to specialist talent, the organisation has adopted a successful ‘grow your own’ approach, combining departmental rotations, mentoring and technical training. Recruiting 12–15 apprentices annually from around 48 applicants, the programme has strengthened retention, reduced workforce age, filled nine roles internally since 2023 and ensured the capability needed to deliver safety-critical projects across the nuclear and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Strengthening internal talent pipelines

Teleperformance developed a multi-layered learning and leadership programme to address growing workforce demands and strengthen internal talent pipelines during a period of rapid expansion. Since 2024, more than 3,000 employees have benefited from over 10,000 hours of targeted training, coaching and development. The initiative has increased internal fill rates from 64% to 75%, reduced onboarding times by up to five days, improved progression outcomes and delivered measurable business benefits, including substantial recruitment savings.

The York Glaziers Trust

Safeguarding specialist conservation skills
Heritage crafts | 10-49 employees | York

The York Glaziers Trust’s guided traineeship programme has strengthened the future of a critically endangered craft by developing a pipeline of skilled stained-glass conservators. Since 2021, four trainees have progressed through hands-on learning on live conservation projects, supporting succession planning and organisational resilience. The programme has reduced the workforce age profile from 47 to 40, enabled career progression into senior roles and safeguarded specialist conservation skills for future generations.

Strengthening leadership progression for women

The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy’s Herschel Programme has strengthened leadership progression for women in technical roles across higher education and research. Since 2022, more than 1,140 participants from over 120 institutions have completed the programme, with 41% achieving promotion or grade increases. The initiative has increased leadership confidence, expanded professional networks and helped address gender disparities in technical leadership roles.

Umbrella Training Ltd developed the Umbrella Colleague Academy to strengthen internal capability and respond to increasing learner complexity, organisational growth and evolving sector requirements. Since 2023, 19 employees have progressed through development pathways focused on teaching excellence, SEND, compliance and leadership. The programme has enhanced workforce capability and contributed to outstanding learner outcomes, including a 72% apprenticeship distinction rate.

Maintaining a robust process: A new generation of Ambassadors strengthening the Princess Royal Training Awards

This year the Princess Royal Training Awards celebrated their eleventh year, and the programme continued to go from strength to strength, with 132 applications received from organisations committed to delivering exceptional learning and development.

Delivered by the City & Guilds Foundation, the Awards remain a unique, evidence-based programme that recognises and celebrates the strategic impact of learning, development and training within organisations. Applicants must demonstrate excellence against three Hallmarks of Excellence, evidencing why training was chosen to address an organisational challenge, how it was implemented and the impact it had on both the organisation and its people.

Reflecting the increasingly global nature of workforces and training provision, this year we expanded their eligibility criteria to include organisations delivering training both within the UK and Ireland, and internationally. This development recognises the contribution of organisations with overseas operations that had previously been unable to participate.
